Welcome to the Division of General Studies
The Division of General Studies (formerly LAS General Curriculum) is the advising hub for University of Illinois students who wish to explore their options before declaring a major. We also serve students in transition between colleges or majors. The DGS student body comprises approximately 3,300 students—or nearly 11 percent of all Illinois undergraduates.
During their time at DGS, our students actively explore their academic interests, abilities, and options -- an enterprise that lies at the heart of the educational pursuit. The DGS student body comprises some of the most gifted students on campus with approximately 13 percent of the freshman class entering as James Scholar Honors students. Beyond the classroom, our undergraduates get involved with student organizations, volunteer work, study abroad, and internships. In short, DGS students are engaged, dynamic, and curious.
Combining advising and mentoring, our academic advisors are uniquely qualified to guide students as they make informed academic decisions and craft their future goals. Our dedication to our students is reflected in the many accolades we have received.
DGS does not grant degrees but prepares students to move into one of the many majors on campus. Our students can ultimately move into every major in every college at the University of Illinois once they have met the required transfer criteria.
Whatever their ultimate academic and vocational endeavors, DGS students are strong contributors to the vitality of the Illinois campus and community.
